Portugal has quietly become one of Europe's best elopement destinations. The country recognises civil weddings for foreigners with minimal residency requirements, the landscapes are cinematic, the food is regional, and venue costs are a fraction of Italy or France. Here is how to plan an intimate wedding around Casa do Sol.
Legal essentials
To marry in Portugal as a foreigner you need:
- Original birth certificates (apostilled and translated to Portuguese)
- Certificate of No Impediment / Single Status (apostilled and translated, valid 6 months)
- Passports
- A statement of marital status (Conservatória form)
- Application filed at the local Conservatória do Registo Civil at least 30 days before the date
Total cost in 2026: roughly €120–250 plus translation/apostille fees. Most couples hire a local wedding planner (€500–1,500) to handle the paperwork — strongly recommended unless one of you reads Portuguese. *costs might change
Symbolic ceremonies (not legally binding, with a celebrant of your choice) require no paperwork. Many couples marry legally at home and elope to Portugal for the celebration. Equally valid, much faster to plan.
Why Casa do Sol works for elopements
- Single-party rental means the property is exclusively yours — no other guests, no hotel-corridor awkwardness
- Sleeps 6 in three en-suite bedrooms, perfect for the couple + 4 close family or friends
- Lawn for 12 can host a marquee or a long table for a wedding dinner of up to 12 guests
- Cinematic backdrops — the sunset terrace, the stone barn façade, the chestnut grove behind the pool
- Private chef can design a multi-course wedding menu around Vinho Verde
- Quiet enough for vows you can actually hear
Vendor network we work with
After several elopements at the villa, we have a short, trusted vendor list:
- Photographer: Porto-based fine-art photographer, 8-hour package
- Officiant: English-speaking celebrant for symbolic ceremonies
- Florist: Guimarães floral designer specialising in wild, foraged styles
- Hair & makeup: mobile team from Braga
- Catering: Douro private chef + Vinho Verde sommelier
- Music: acoustic duo (guitar + voice) for the ceremony
All independent vendors — we receive no kickback. Email us for current contacts.
