Near Porto
Fifty minutes from Porto (OPO) airport along the A4 — far enough to disappear, close enough for a day trip. Three en-suite bedrooms, private 11-metre pool, panoramic Marão views.
Casa do Sol sits in the rolling hills above Celorico de Basto — a 50-minute drive east of Porto International Airport (OPO), straight along the A4 motorway. Close enough that you can land at noon and be in the pool by two; remote enough that the loudest sound at night is the river. The A4 carries one toll between OPO and the villa (around €4 each way) and is well-lit, well-maintained and almost entirely free of motorway-network slowdowns outside Porto rush hour.
Porto itself is a single, easy day trip. The Ribeira riverfront, the Dom Luís bridge, port-wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, lunch at Cantina 32 or Tapabento, an afternoon at Livraria Lello and a sunset across the Douro from the Crystal Palace Gardens — all packs comfortably into one day from the villa. We recommend leaving Casa do Sol at 10:00 and starting the return drive after sundown; the A4 is at its quietest between 19:00 and 21:00. If a single day feels rushed, Porto is also fine to do as a one-night overnight, with the villa held for your return.
In the other direction the Douro Valley unfolds: the wineries of Régua and Pinhão are 90 minutes east. Many guests do a single Douro day trip — a morning train along the river to Pinhão, lunch at Quinta de la Rosa, a tasting at Sandeman or Quinta do Crasto, and the rental car waiting for the drive back. The western Atlantic coast — surf beaches at Vila do Conde, the rocky coves of Esposende and the boardwalks of São Pedro de Maceda — is seventy-five minutes by car along the A11.
Free private parking accommodates two cars on the villa property. We strongly recommend renting a car from OPO for the duration of your stay — most of the best regional experiences (wineries, river beaches, hikes, restaurants) are within twenty to forty minutes by road, with no reliable public transport between them. A private transfer from OPO can be arranged for arrivals after 23:00 or for guests who prefer not to drive on arrival day.
For business travellers and weekend trippers from Porto, the villa is also a comfortable short stay. Three nights gives you Porto on day one, the Douro on day two, and a full day at the villa (sauna, pool, river hike) on day three before the return flight. Many couples use Casa do Sol as a quiet base for one of the Porto Wine Fest weeks, choosing to drive in for a single evening event rather than stay in the city. The villa is also a clean conference-recovery option — fly in to Porto for a Tuesday-Wednesday event, decompress at Casa do Sol Thursday-Friday, fly out Saturday morning.

About your hosts: Casa do Sol is hosted directly by its owners — a Portuguese-German family who restored the property in 2023 and personally welcome every arrival. They live nearby, respond to WhatsApp within the hour, and curate a small but trusted network of local partners: a private chef from the Douro, a sommelier in Celorico de Basto, a yoga teacher from Guimarães and a deep-tissue therapist trained in Porto.
