Wellness Retreat Villa in Northern Portugal with Sauna

Outdoor cedar wood-fired sauna, 11-metre pool, silent mountain forests and slow mornings on the south-facing terrace. The countryside antidote to city life — 50 minutes from Porto.

The wellness offer at Casa do Sol is intentionally minimal — no spa packages, no scheduled programmes, no juice cleanses, no incense burning in the corridors. What we offer is the raw infrastructure of a deeply restorative stay: an outdoor cedar wood-fired sauna, an 11-metre pool open from May through October, marked forest trails directly from the property gate, and the kind of silence you usually have to travel days for. The brief is yours to shape.

The sauna is the centrepiece. It is wood-fired, sits in its own granite-walled corner of the garden screened by chestnut trees, and reaches 95°C reliably in about forty minutes. Cedar interior, ergonomic two-tier benches, a small dry-relax bench outside for the cold-air pause. Firewood is stacked daily and topped up by the housekeeping team in their single morning window. Use it after a sunset swim and you sleep about ninety minutes longer than usual.

On request, in-villa massage can be arranged by prior arrangement for an additional cost — a single appointment in the late afternoon, 60 or 90 minutes, in the privacy of the villa. Beyond that, the wellness brief is self-directed. Marked forest trails leave straight from the property gate, with quiet wooded sections of the Tâmega valley a short walk away — many guests build their own slow morning walks into the trees. Nothing is bundled into a package; you book exactly what you want and nothing more.

The villa is a 20-minute drive from Caldas de Vizela, one of Portugal's oldest thermal spa towns, for those who want a deeper hydrotherapy experience (sulphurous thermal pools, in-water massage, hammam). The thermal town has been a treatment destination since Roman times and the modern facility is calm, clean and used predominantly by Portuguese guests. We can book the slots for you in advance to avoid the morning queues.

Sleep design is the under-appreciated wellness pillar of the villa. Bedrooms have black-out curtains, the property has zero artificial light pollution (no streetlights within a kilometre, no neighbouring porch lights), there are no televisions in any bedroom, and the kitchen-stocked tisane shelf carries Portuguese mountain teas (cidreira, hortelã pimenta, camomila). Most guests sleep at least an hour longer per night by day three. The combination of sauna in the evening, dark bedroom, and morning birdsong is genuinely difficult to find in city life.

Frequently asked

Practical Questions

Is the sauna private?+

Yes — the cedar wood-fired sauna is part of the villa and used only by your party. It reaches 95°C and seats four comfortably. Firewood is included and replenished daily.

Can you arrange massage during my stay?+

Yes — in-villa massage can be arranged by prior arrangement for an additional cost. Please request at booking or at least 48 hours in advance of your preferred slot.

Is the pool heated?+

No — the pool is not heated. It is open from May through October, when natural Northern-Portugal sun reliably brings it to a swimmable temperature. Outside of those months the sauna runs year-round and is the better warm-water option.

Are there walking trails directly from the villa?+

Yes — marked self-guided trails leave from the lane outside the villa, ranging from 30-minute strolls to half-day hikes along the Tâmega valley. We provide printed maps and route notes on arrival.

Are there forest walks I can do on my own?+

Yes — marked self-guided trails leave straight from the property gate into the chestnut and oak woods, and quiet wooded sections of the Tâmega valley are a short walk away. We provide printed route notes on arrival.
