Northern Portugal has four real seasons — unusually for southern Europe — and each one is its own kind of beautiful. Here is what to expect month by month, and which travellers each season suits best.
January — quiet, cold, atmospheric
Average temperature: 6–12 °C
Rainfall: High (the wettest month after December)
Cold, often rainy, occasional frost in the hills. This is sauna season. Long fires in the living room, very few other tourists. Excellent value — quintas are open by appointment, and Porto is at its most local.
February — emerging
Average: 7–13 °C · Mood: quiet
The first camellias appear around Celorico de Basto (we host the International Camellia Festival in early March — book in advance). Hiking on dry days is glorious.
March — camellias and rain
Average: 9–16 °C
The Camellia Festival peaks. Vineyards begin pruning. Wildflowers along the Tâmega. Bring a raincoat and good shoes.
April — green explosion
Average: 11–18 °C
The hillsides turn the deep emerald that gives Vinho Verde its name. River walks, picnics, the first warm afternoons. Easter brings local festas in the villages.
May — peak shoulder season
Average: 13–22 °C
Possibly the single best month. Sunny, dry-ish, hillsides still green, the pool warming up. Quintas in full activity. Highly recommended for first-time visitors.
June — early summer
Average: 16–26 °C
The pool is fully open. Long evenings, festas de Santos (S. António, S. João, S. Pedro — Porto's S. João on the 23rd is legendary). Tourism still moderate.
July — full summer
Average: 19–29 °C
Hot, dry, busy in Porto and the coast. At Casa do Sol — 300 m altitude — nights remain cool (16–20 °C), making sleep easy. Pool days, vineyard walks at sunset.
August — high season
Average: 19–30 °C
Portugal's national holiday month. Coast and Porto are full of returning emigrants. Inland (us) stays calm. Book early.
September — harvest
Average: 17–27 °C · Mood: romantic
The single most photogenic month. Vinho Verde harvest runs mid-September through early October — quintas often welcome visitors to pick. Warm days, cool nights, golden light.
October — autumn colours
Average: 13–22 °C
Vineyard leaves turn red and gold. Chestnut harvest in the surrounding forests. First fires lit indoors in the evenings. Stunning.
November — bare and beautiful
Average: 9–16 °C
Vineyards bare, forests russet. Excellent month for couples — quiet, low rates, hot sauna, long dinners. Bring layers.
December — Christmas
Average: 6–13 °C
Cold, occasionally crisp and sunny, often rainy. Christmas markets in Porto and Braga. Casa do Sol is at its cosiest — fires, sauna, mulled Vinho Verde tinto. New Year stays are popular; book early.
