Wellness
Outdoor cedar Nordic sauna, 11-metre solar-heated pool, silent mountain forests and slow mornings on the south-facing terrace. The countryside antidote to city life — 50 minutes from Porto.
The wellness offer at Casa do Sol is intentionally minimal — no spa packages, no scheduled programmes, no juice cleanses, no incense burning in the corridors. What we offer is the raw infrastructure of a deeply restorative stay: an outdoor cedar Nordic-style sauna, an 11-metre pool kept at 27°C from May through October, marked forest trails directly from the property gate, and the kind of silence you usually have to travel days for. The brief is yours to shape.
The sauna is the centrepiece. It is wood-fired, sits in its own granite-walled corner of the garden screened by chestnut trees, and reaches 95°C reliably in about forty minutes. Cedar interior, ergonomic two-tier benches, a small dry-relax bench outside for the cold-air pause. Firewood is stacked daily and topped up by the housekeeping team in their single morning window. Use it after a sunset swim and you sleep about ninety minutes longer than usual.
On request we can arrange a small selection of practitioners. A yoga teacher from Guimarães runs sunrise sessions on the south terrace — typically 60 minutes, vinyasa or yin, mat and props provided. A deep-tissue therapist trained in Porto arrives in the late afternoon for 60- or 90-minute in-villa massages. A certified forest-bathing guide takes guests on half-day walks along the Tâmega — slow attention, sensory exercises, no goal beyond presence. None of these is bundled into a package; you book exactly what you want and nothing more.
The villa is a 20-minute drive from Caldas de Vizela, one of Portugal's oldest thermal spa towns, for those who want a deeper hydrotherapy experience (sulphurous thermal pools, in-water massage, hammam). The thermal town has been a treatment destination since Roman times and the modern facility is calm, clean and used predominantly by Portuguese guests. We can book the slots for you in advance to avoid the morning queues.
Sleep design is the under-appreciated wellness pillar of the villa. Bedrooms have black-out curtains, the property has zero artificial light pollution (no streetlights within a kilometre, no neighbouring porch lights), there are no televisions in any bedroom, and the kitchen-stocked tisane shelf carries Portuguese mountain teas (cidreira, hortelã pimenta, camomila). Most guests sleep at least an hour longer per night by day three. The combination of sauna in the evening, dark bedroom, and morning birdsong is genuinely difficult to find in city life.

About your hosts: Casa do Sol is hosted directly by its owners — a Portuguese-German family who restored the property in 2023 and personally welcome every arrival. They live nearby, respond to WhatsApp within the hour, and curate a small but trusted network of local partners: a private chef from the Douro, a sommelier in Celorico de Basto, a yoga teacher from Guimarães and a deep-tissue therapist trained in Porto.
