The Vinho Verde region — the only DOC wine zone in the world named after the freshness of its wines, not a place — surrounds Casa do Sol. The villa sits on a granite hillside in Celorico de Basto, the Basto sub-region of the Vinho Verde DOC, where Alvarinho, Loureiro, Trajadura and Avesso grow on schist terraces that have been worked since the 16th century. The reds of Basto — particularly Vinhão — are some of the few seriously age-able Vinho Verdes and pair extraordinarily well with the smoked pork of the Minho.

Within twenty minutes of the villa you can taste at Quinta Santa Cristina (an artisan estate, family-run since 1869, where Casa do Sol guests receive a 10% discount on tastings and bottle purchases), at Quinta de Outeiro and Casa da Senra (smaller family producers where the owner pours the bottles personally), or at Aveleda (the largest Vinho Verde producer in Portugal, thirty minutes by car, with a formal estate tour and gardens). Two further small family quintas sit on the lanes between Celorico and Mondim de Basto — these are not in any guidebook, and we will walk you through how to arrange a visit.

Harvest runs mid-September through early October. This is the most beautiful, aromatic and visually striking time of year to visit. Quinta Santa Cristina and several smaller estates welcome guests during the vindima and some will let you help pick for an hour or two before pressing a glass of unfiltered must into your hand. The vines turn golden in the second week of October; by the third week the leaves are deep amber. For wine-focused stays of three or more nights we recommend timing the trip to the harvest weekend.

For wine-focused stays we partner with a sommelier in Celorico de Basto who arranges curated tasting itineraries — typically three quintas per day, with a private driver to handle the country lanes. Day one is usually focused on the Basto sub-region for its character; day two crosses west into the Amarante and Penafiel sub-regions for contrast; day three (if you have it) reaches the Douro Valley for the inevitable big-Port-house tasting and a long lunch at Quinta de la Rosa or Quinta do Crasto. The sommelier also runs private tastings at the villa: typically a five-bottle Vinho Verde flight on the south terrace as the sun goes down, with charcuterie and local cheeses, all set up and cleared down by him.

The villa is itself stocked for serious wine-week stays. The cellar-temperature wine fridge holds twelve bottles and is stocked on arrival with an introductory Vinho Verde from Quinta Santa Cristina and a Douro red. There is a magnum-friendly decanter and proper Riedel-style stemware. The south-facing terrace, the kitchen island and the lounge fireplace all work for unhurried evening tastings. Many wine-focused guests do their morning quinta visits, swim and sauna over lunch, then settle in for an in-villa flight in the evening rather than driving home from another restaurant.

About your hosts: Casa do Sol is hosted directly by its owners — a Portuguese-German family who restored the property in 2023 and personally welcome every arrival. They live nearby, respond to WhatsApp within the hour, and curate a small but trusted network of local partners: a private chef from the Douro, a sommelier in Celorico de Basto, a yoga teacher from Guimarães and a deep-tissue therapist trained in Porto.

Can you arrange wine tastings during my stay?+

Yes — we work with a local sommelier who designs 1-3 day tasting itineraries with a private driver, plus private in-villa tastings (5-bottle Vinho Verde flights on the south terrace). Book ideally 7+ days in advance.

When is the harvest (vindima) season?+

Mid-September through early October for Vinho Verde grapes. Several quintas welcome visitors during harvest and some allow you to help pick. This is the most aromatic and visually striking time to visit — book 3-4 months ahead.
