Luxury Retreat
A restored 1950s stone villa in the Vinho Verde countryside — private pool, outdoor sauna, panoramic mountain views and exclusive single-party use. Architecture by a Porto studio, materials sourced within 60 km.
Casa do Sol is not a hotel and never has been. The villa is rented exclusively to a single party — never shared, never overlapping bookings — so the pool, the sauna, the terraces, the kitchen and the gardens are entirely yours, undisturbed, for the length of your stay. There is no reception, no breakfast room, no service hours to plan around. The villa simply is yours.
The architecture is the work of a Porto-based studio that spent three years restoring the original 1950s schist barn while introducing floor-to-ceiling glazing, radiant underfloor heating powered by an air-source heat pump, and a discreet outdoor sauna. The brief was deliberately restrained: keep the granite walls visible from the inside, preserve the original threshing-floor stonework in the entrance hall, and let the light from the Marão valley do the rest. Materials are local — Vila Real granite, hand-thrown Bisalhães pottery, linen woven in nearby Guimarães, chestnut from the Serra do Marão. The result is a property that feels rooted in Northern Portugal yet calibrated to international standards: linens are 400-thread-count Portuguese cotton, the kitchen is Fagor + Smeg, the sound system is Sonos zone-by-zone.
For larger occasions — milestone birthdays, anniversaries, intimate weddings, family reunions — we work with a small network of trusted local partners. A private chef from the Douro designs tasting menus around Vinho Verde, Minho lamb and seasonal produce. A sommelier in Celorico de Basto curates Vinho Verde, Douro and Port flights and arranges quinta tastings. A yoga teacher from Guimarães runs sunrise sessions on the terrace. A deep-tissue therapist arrives at the villa in the late afternoon. Everything is arranged before you land — the brief is luxury without admin friction.
Privacy is the design principle. The driveway is gated. The pool and sauna are screened from any line of sight. The closest neighbouring property — a single farmhouse — is 120 metres away behind a stand of mature pines. The valley floor below the villa is uninhabited vineyards. The lane that serves Casa do Sol carries perhaps ten cars on a typical day. After a single in-person welcome and key handover, hosts are available by WhatsApp but never enter the property unless requested. Daily housekeeping is opt-in only and arrives between 10:00 and 12:00 in a single ninety-minute window.
The villa works equally well in the depths of winter as in high summer. Underfloor heating runs from a heat pump (no gas, no log-burning chore); the wood-burning fireplace in the lounge is purely for atmosphere. The pool is solar-heated to 27°C from May through October. The sauna runs year-round. A Nespresso machine, an espresso bar with a Rancilio grinder and a small but seriously curated wine fridge (stocked with introductory Vinho Verde and a Douro red on arrival) round out the kitchen. Guests routinely tell us this is the most rested they have been in a year.

About your hosts: Casa do Sol is hosted directly by its owners — a Portuguese-German family who restored the property in 2023 and personally welcome every arrival. They live nearby, respond to WhatsApp within the hour, and curate a small but trusted network of local partners: a private chef from the Douro, a sommelier in Celorico de Basto, a yoga teacher from Guimarães and a deep-tissue therapist trained in Porto.
